Local rescues step up when shelter reaches capacity

BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) — The City of Buffalo Animal Shelter has a lot of animals come in during the spring and summer months, at times reaching its capacity. To keep space open for pets in need, Director of the City of Buffalo Animal Shelter Jen Butera says they reach out to local rescues and the Erie and Niagara SPCAs if they can take in dogs.

“There are times, especially during the summer, when we’ll have every cage filled,” said Butera. “Then we’re putting animals in temporary cages but we do rely a lot the rescues to help us with that.”

Butera says during the warmer months, the shelter is extremely busy with people surrendering dogs and strays coming in. She says the shelter is actively looking for a bigger location. In the meantime, several local rescues bring dogs from the shelter into foster homes. Buffalo Underdogs Rescue is one of them. It takes in dogs who may have medical or behavioral needs, or are not doing well in the shelter…
