How restaurants, custodians and parents saved a CNY senior ball in less than 4 hours

Central Square, N.Y. — The first calls started around 11 a.m. Saturday. A dangerous situation was unfolding in downtown Syracuse, just two blocks from the venue where Paul V. Moore’s High School senior ball was being held.

Three city police officers were injured in a shooting. A standoff was ongoing.

At 1:30 p.m., Central Square Schools Superintendent Thomas Colabufo made the hard decision. He canceled the senior ball, which was to start at 6 p.m. at the Oncenter. He knew students often show up to the celebration early to take photos and eat. The district had to cancel, he said…
