Newly Elected College of DuPage Student Trustee Apologizes for Use of Racial Slurs

Newly elected College of DuPage (COD) Student Trustee, Danna Gonzalez, said her actions were “wrong and unacceptable” after messages and recordings from the fall semester surfaced this spring showing her using the N-word.

The recordings and screenshots, shared privately before spreading more broadly on campus, showed the 17-year-old student trustee using the N-word during private conversations with an ex-boyfriend from the fall semester. The Courier obtained copies of the recordings and screenshots and independently verified the contents with Gonzalez and the other person involved in the conversations. The Courier reached out to the alleged ex-boyfriend and they declined an interview and didn’t want to provide further comment.

Student Leadership Council (SLC) President Kristen Joyce Lopez said SLC officers became aware of the messages during the spring semester, shortly before the SLC election in March, after students brought the recordings and screenshots to members of the organization.

“[SLC] was made aware of it on the same day when people from the hub had come into the room and brought it up,” Lopez said. “When that had come up, we wanted to make sure that there were photos or videos. We didn’t want it to be big gossip, because it also is someone who is serving on our team.”…
