Seattle’s best-known street artist has created hundreds of murals on the sides of homes, businesses and garages, whimsical caricature-like paintings of animals and flowers in bold colors. Signed simply “Henry,” most are in the greater Seattle area, especially in Ballard and Fremont, but they sprinkle the state from Bellingham to Spokane.
I took the Henry Art Tour, where we saw over 20 Seattle murals by Ryan “Henry” Ward in a psychedelic-colored bus, painted inside and out in his distinct style. Our guide, David Roman, described Seattle’s evolution as an art center beyond its famous glass, and also pointed out well-known murals by other artists.
In his most ambitious project yet, Ward decided to paint 1,000 Sasquatch murals for anyone willing to commission him in 2025. His toothy Sasquatches, often surrounded by other woodland animals since they protect forests, he said, are arguably the biggest public art project in the Pacific Northwest.
