Florida lawmakers are set to return to Tallahassee tomorrow for a special session expected to last up to three weeks to finish the state budget, but with less money available this year, several big-ticket requests in North Florida could be left unfunded.
Among the largest local requests is a push by Rep. Jason Shoaf for more than $54 million to finish a new Wakulla High School after construction costs jumped by more than $32 million. District leaders say they cannot finish the project without state help. Wakulla Schools Superintendent Richard Myhre warned in January that the district’s ability to cover the work on its own is limited.
“It would take us 20 years of using every dollar that we get to repair everything to do what we’re doing at Wakulla High School,” Myhre said…
