Backfire causes 1996 Chevy Camaro to go up in flames near Mulvane

WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) — A car backfiring caused a fire near Mulvane on Monday.

Mulvane Fire Rescue said several reports came in around 3 p.m., regarding a “large column of black smoke.”

At the south end of Mulvane on Kansas Highway 15, crews found a 1996 Chevy Camaro engulfed in flames, according to the deputy fire chief.

The department said the car owner had just put in a new battery, and it backfired when they tried to start it. The car, along with the grass and a stack of old tires, caught on fire.

The closest fire hydrant was across K-15, so water was pumped from an engine with the Derby Fire Department…
