Parents, educators upset over N.J. town’s handling of school disruption during massive fire

Parents and educators in Belleville are calling for a centralized emergency communication system, saying the district and township failed to keep them informed after the massive warehouse fire that forced schools to close last week.

“Our goal is not to assign blame, but to ensure that our community is better prepared, better informed and better protected in future emergencies,” the Belleville Education Association and the School 9 Home and School Association said in an open letter Tuesday.

Specifically, parents and teachers say they were “forced to rely on social media and group chats” for school information for four days after the fire began.
