Georgia bill expanding access to HIV prevention drugs heads to Kemp’s desk

SAVANNAH, Ga. (WSAV) — A bill aimed at expanding access to HIV prevention medication in Georgia is one step closer to becoming law after passing both chambers of the state legislature with bipartisan support.

Senate Bill 195 would allow trained pharmacists to dispense or administer HIV prevention medications known as PrEP, or pre-exposure prophylaxis, and PEP or post-exposure prophylaxis.

PrEP is used to help prevent the transmission of HIV before exposure, while PEP is an emergency medication taken within 72 hours after possible exposure to help stop infection…
