Ann Arbor schools weigh policy change eliminating 2 barriers to graduation

ANN ARBOR, MI – A change in policy is in the works with Ann Arbor Public Schools that district officials say is aimed at adjusting graduation requirements to help remove two major barriers for a fraction of students who fall behind.

The first barrier is the number of credits it takes to graduate, and the second is a state grant rule requiring families to fill out financial aid paperwork for collegebound students. The Ann Arbor School Board’s governance committee got a preview of the proposed policy changes on Tuesday, May 7.

Currently, the state of Michigan requires 18 credits covering core academic subjects for high-schoolers to graduate, while AAPS requires 22 credits ― a four-credit difference that, officials said, are electives…
