EL PASO, Texas (KFOX14/CBS4) — May is National Military Appreciation Month, and on Tuesday, the community came out to show their appreciation and honor the legacy of an El Paso World War II veteran.
On April 12, WWII vet Manuel Louis Santoscoy celebrated his 101st birthday, but then, a couple of days later, on April 16, Santoscoy passed away.
On Tuesday, Santoscoy’s son, Patrick, laid him to rest and reflected on the sacrifices he made and on the legacy of his service that will shape generations of their family.
According to his obituary, Santoscoy served with the U.S. Army in the Pacific Theater and was awarded the Bronze Star and the Purple Heart, the WWII Victory Medal, the Pacific Campaign Medal, the Good Conduct Medal and the Philippine Islands Victory Medal; and was severely wounded by a mortar round while fighting in the Philippine Islands.
