Floridas Alligator Alcatraz Detention Center May Close Soon, Sources Say

The Florida immigration detention center, often referred to as “Alligator Alcatraz,” is reportedly slated for closure in the near future, according to multiple sources familiar with ongoing developments. However, officials caution that plans remain tentative as final arrangements continue to be negotiated.

A spokesperson for the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) declined to confirm the closure but emphasized that Florida remains a key partner in advancing federal immigration policies. The spokesperson stated, “Any reports that DHS is pressuring the state to cease operations at Alligator Alcatraz are false. DHS continuously evaluates detention needs to ensure they align with current operational requirements.”

Located at a training airport in Florida, the facility began receiving detainees in July of last year as part of the Trump administration’s intensified immigration enforcement efforts. Since its opening, the detention center has faced numerous lawsuits and criticism from lawmakers and immigrant advocates over detainee conditions. Notably, a federal judge recently denied the administration’s request to pause a court order mandating detainees have access to legal counsel and other essential resources.

When asked about the potential closure during a press event, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis indicated he had not received official notification that detainees would no longer be sent to the center. He also reiterated that the facility was intended as a temporary measure to compensate for federal resource shortages.

“It was always meant to be temporary because the federal government initially lacked the capacity to house these individuals,” DeSantis explained. “Now, with additional funding over the past nine months, the federal government has been able to adjust its operations accordingly. Ideally, I wouldn’t want to be involved in this business at all.”

As discussions continue, the future of the “Alligator Alcatraz” detention center remains uncertain, with stakeholders closely monitoring developments.
