Matthew McConaughey Spent 22 Days in Jungle to Escape Fame and Find Himself

Additional Coverage:

Matthew McConaughey recently opened up about a remarkable chapter in his life when he took a 22-day self-imposed retreat in the Peruvian jungle to reconnect with himself away from the glare of Hollywood.

Long before a wave of celebrities began leaving the U.S. amid political tensions during Donald Trump’s presidency, McConaughey sought his own form of escape. The Texas-born actor, known for his charismatic presence on screen, shared the story during a May 5 appearance on the No Magic Pill podcast with Blake Mycoskie. Reflecting on a period after his rise to fame, he revealed that despite winning an Oscar, he only earned $200,000 for the role-a fact that seemed to add perspective to his journey.

After breaking out with the 1993 cult classic Dazed and Confused and solidifying his status with A Time to Kill in 1996, McConaughey began feeling the pressures of celebrity life. To ground himself, he took a solo trip to Peru, adopting the alias “Mateo” to meet people who knew nothing of his fame.

“I needed to get my feet on the ground,” he said. “So I click out.

Boom. Go to Peru.

I needed to find it, to check the validation. I knew I had it, I just had to go prove it again.”

The first days in the jungle were challenging, with McConaughey describing them as “wonky,” but as time passed, he settled into a new rhythm and realized that this simpler existence was something he could embrace. “I was now at the place long enough to go, ‘I could live this.

This could be my existence.’ As soon as you go, ‘I could do this,’ then you’re like, ‘Well, I can return home.’”

The actor found profound meaning in interacting with people who knew him only as Mateo, free from the trappings of stardom. “At the end of 22 days, the tears in their eyes and the tears in my eyes and the hugs we had on the sadness and happiness of saying goodbye were all based off of the man they met named Mateo, who had nothing to do with the celebrity.”

This experience reaffirmed his sense of self beyond the Hollywood spotlight. “It reaffirmed my own identity that, ‘Oh, I still got it. This is based on me.’”

Matthew McConaughey, who embraced this transformative journey under the name Mateo, continues to build his career and is slated to star in the upcoming thriller The Rivals of Amziah King, set for release on August 14, 2026.
