Navy prepares San Diego-based warship for possible deployment to Middle East

SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) —  The San Diego-based Navy amphibious assault ship USS Makin Island is making preparations for a possible deployment to the Middle East, Acting Navy Secretary Hung Cao told a House Appropriations subcommittee Tuesday.

The 843-foot warship, which carries F-35 fighter jets, is one of the largest in San Diego and would carry Marines from Camp Pendleton to join U.S. forces in the war with Iran. Cao did not confirm how many soldiers would be on the ship or when it would depart from San Diego.
