Editor’s note: Every other week, Nevada Sports Net will spotlight a local athlete as part of our “Legendary Athletes” series, which is presented in partnership with Legends Bay Casino. Today’s featured athlete is Emmy Award-winning sports journalist Bonnie Bernstein, who made history as Reno’s first weekday female sports anchor at KRNV in 1993. A stint in the Biggest Little City helped propel her career, and she recently created a new series called, “The Champions Edge.”
Bonnie Bernstein is one of the most accomplished female sportscasters ever and said her two-year stint working as a broadcaster in Reno at KRNV was absolutely critical to propelling her career.
“I started out at KRNV as a general-assignment reporter focusing on gaming and entertainment, and I knew I wanted to go into sports,” Bernstein said. “I would literally work seven days a week, and I would just go out and cover stuff at Reno or one of the high schools just to get practice. And then I had the opportunity to be the Biggest Little City’s first female weekday sports anchor and having the chance to do that was really my jumping-off platform to going to ESPN. So, I’m forever grateful for my friends in Reno and the opportunity to work in the market.”…
