Las Vegas Reviews High School Crossing Guard Pilot Amid Student Safety Concerns

As the 2025-2026 school year draws to a close, Las Vegas officials are preparing to assess whether a first-of-its-kind crossing guard program at four local high schools delivered enough results to justify keeping, and potentially growing, it.

The City of Las Vegas launched the pilot this school year, positioning crossing guards near Cimarron-Memorial, Arbor View, Palo Verde, and Clark high schools at a combined cost of $39,000. No other municipality in the region has funded crossing guards at the high school level. At year-end, city officials will examine incident data and student utilization rates to determine the program’s future.

The stakes are significant. Across Clark County, 388 students were struck by vehicles while commuting to or from school during the current academic year, according to the Clark County School District Police Department. At Cimarron-Memorial, rapid neighborhood growth along the Tenaya and Smoke Ranch Road corridor has made the surrounding streets increasingly hazardous, contributing to 11 student-involved traffic incidents at that campus this year alone…
