As teams and drivers rev up at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway for Fast Friday, setting the stage for a weekend of intense qualifying battles, the day’s headline wasn’t about lap times but a special announcement. Despite a rain delay early in the session, the Indianapolis Motor Speedway revealed the honorary starter for this year’s iconic Indianapolis 500.

This prestigious role will be filled by none other than Indianapolis-born actor Brendan Fraser. The announcement came Friday as fans and participants awaited clearer skies to hit the track.

Fraser, acclaimed for his roles in the “Mummy” series and most recently for his Academy Award-winning performance in “The Whale,” is also starring in an upcoming film titled “Pressure.” In this movie, he portrays General Dwight D. Eisenhower during the critical hours leading up to the D-Day invasion of Normandy.

IndyCar and IMS President Doug Boles emphasized Fraser’s connection to both the city and the race’s significance. “Brendan stars in a movie about one of the most pivotal moments in World War II,” Boles said. “His presence atop the flag stand is fitting as we honor the service and sacrifice of our military heroes on Memorial Day Weekend and prepare for another iconic edition of the world’s greatest race.”

He added, “Brendan was also born in the Circle City, and we’re incredibly excited to give him a warm Hoosier welcome as he returns for ‘The Greatest Spectacle in Racing.’”

Fraser’s involvement brings a notable blend of Hollywood prestige and local pride to the event. While his filmography includes a variety of roles, it is his recent accolades and connection to Indianapolis that make him a standout choice for this year’s ceremonial start.

Qualifying sessions are scheduled for Saturday and Sunday, setting the grid for the 110th running of the Indianapolis 500 on Sunday, May 24. Coverage will begin at 10 a.m. ET on Fox, promising an exciting buildup to one of motorsports’ most celebrated races.
