Knoxville set to launch pilot program allowing people to walk around Market Square with alcoholic drinks

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — People will soon be able to carry alcoholic beverages while strolling through Market Square and possibly around the Smokies stadium in the Old City under a pilot program set to launch in mid-July.

City officials have designated Market Square as a Designated Outdoor Refreshment Area, or DORA, allowing participating businesses to sell beer, wine and cocktails within a defined outdoor zone from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m.

Drinks must be served in a can or an approved DORA-labeled cup and may not be carried into other businesses. Signage and maps will mark zone boundaries, and all beverages must be finished and thrown out before leaving the area…
