South Side Charity Founded By 2 Nuns To Help Asylum-Seekers Will Close This Fall

MOUNT GREENWOOD — A nonprofit that supports asylum-seekers will cease operations this fall after three years of helping migrants in Chicago.

Catherine’s Caring Cause was founded by Sisters of Mercy Pat Murphy and JoAnn Persch. The two dedicated their lives to immigrant rights and founded the nonprofit in October 2022 after being contacted about an asylum-seeking family of six from Sierra Leone that needed housing in Chicago.

Over the years, the foundation, which is based in Mount Greenwood, has supported 48 families, including 70 adults and 81 children. Families were provided housing and other necessities for a year to help them gain long-term independence, said board President Bridget Duignan…
