Plane broke apart in mid-air before crash that killed 5 Amarillo residents, NTSB says

WIMBERLEY, Texas — A preliminary report from the National Transportation Safety Board indicates a plane carrying five people from Amarillo began breaking apart in midair before crashing near Wimberley, last month, killing everyone on board.

The report also revealed the aircraft’s pitot tube — a device used to measure airspeed — iced over during the flight, leaving the pilot relying on backup instruments.

The April 30 crash killed pilot Justin Glen Appling and passengers Hayden Dillard, Seren Wilson, Brooke Skypala and Stacy Hedrick, all identified as members of the Amarillo Pickleball Club traveling to a tournament in New Braunfels…
