CHICAGO — Following the exciting news that two eagle chicks were spotted in a nest in a Chicago park for the first time in nearly a century, local fried chicken favorite Harold’s had even more exciting and also delicious news. For the first time in nearly a century, eagle will be returning to their menu at select locations.
“Eagle was one of the most popular items on the original Harold’s Chicken Shack menu,” said Robert Allen-Alan, manager of Harold’s Chicken Shack #35, which is closest to Park 597 and has “called dibs.” “When the first restaurant opened in 1950, eagles were very ‘in.’ Folks were feeling patriotic about winning WWII, they wanted to eat eagle! Then the Korean War broke out and DDT killed most of the eagle population and suddenly everyone wanted to eat chicken again.”
Conservation efforts have brought back the bald eagle population in recent years and the species was removed from endangered status completely in 2007. While eagles have been abundant in more rural areas of Illinois, they have not been spotted nesting or being served with mild sauce and a side of fries within city limits in recent history…
