Bay Area to see sneaker waves, rip currents during festive weekend

Dangerous swimming, boating and surfing conditions are expected across the Bay Area this weekend as gale-force winds build large waves and rough seas.

The National Weather Service issued a beach hazards statement, which is in effect from 3 p.m. Friday through 9 a.m. Monday. Rip currents are likely as a moderate period wind swell builds surf heights as high as 15 feet at northwest-facing Bay Area beaches. Frequent wind gusts of 40 mph or stronger at the beaches are expected all weekend, particularly each afternoon.

“Gusts will stay strong along the immediate coast, causing blowing and drifting sand and increased sea spray,” the weather service warned. “Water rescue attempts may be hampered by reduced visibilities from the sea spray.”…
