SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (Dakota News Now) – Sunday is a big day in terms of weather. Supercells capable of strong winds, large hail, and tornadoes are likely, especially in the southeastern portion of the viewing area. Due to this, Sunday is a First Alert Weather Day for everyone. From the latest updates there is a chance that any tornado that does form, has the potential to become strong to severe. Things will continue to change overnight and in the morning of Sunday. There is a very rare 15% chance of seeing a tornado within 25 miles of a given point from a line between Sioux Falls to Norfolk, Nebraska. This means places like Sioux Falls, Yankton, Vermillion and others are all under the gun for that threat.
This is the time to prepare for the storms tomorrow especially if you are in southeastern South Dakota, northwest Iowa and southwestern Minnesota. Here is what you should do before the storm tomorrow:
- Know where the safest place is when storms are in your area. This should be a strong interior room, away from windows and on the lowest floor of a building. NO MOBILE HOMES!
- Have multiple ways to receive weather warnings. This can be having a weather radio, downloading the First Alert Weather App, make sure you have alerts turned on for your cell phone so you can get WEA (wireless emergency alerts).
- Keep an eye on the forecast overnight and into the day tomorrow.
Some good news is that Monday’s threat has shifted further to the east and out of our viewing area so we have dropped the First Alert Weather Day…
