Doris Voitier was sheltering inside Chalmette High School when Hurricane Katrina’s floodwaters came rushing toward the campus, engulfing every home and building in its path.
Voitier, who had become superintendent of St. Bernard Parish Public Schools just a year earlier, scrambled with her staff to get the roughly 250 parish residents sheltering in the school to move upstairs. When more people arrived in boats, Voitier helped pull them in through second-story windows.
After hunkering down in the school for several days with little food and water, they emerged to find a devastating scene…
