Storm Center AM Update: Severe weather potential

SIOUX FALLS, SD (KELO) — While Saturday was, overall, a quieter day, the second half of the weekend holds the potential to be the exact opposite of that.

With that said, however, there is a caveat to that potential…and it all has to do with the morning. Cloud cover and lingering showers/storms in the first part of the day will use up some energy in the region. How we recover from that with any thinning/clearing of the clouds going into the afternoon will be a big factor in what kind of potential we can have for active weather.

If we are able to see that materialize, then a quick warm-up should come along and help refuel the atmosphere as low pressure and an associated frontal boundary make their move in the afternoon, evening, and early overnight hours. Here’s a look at the short-range outlook on that idea:

An “Enhanced Risk” for severe weather is in place for southeastern KELOLAND, including the Sioux Falls area. A “Slight Risk” extended north and west from there in yellow, and a “Marginal Risk” goes more north and west of that up toward Sisseton and Mission respectively.

Especially in the Slight and Enhanced areas, all forms of severe weather are on the table. This includes damaging gusts, large hail, and even a few tornadoes. Please stay weather aware and have multiple ways to receive weather warnings.

Showers and storms are expected to linger into Monday, but the severe potential shifts to our south and east. Portions of NW Iowa still have a potential to see a few more storms, but the overall risk is diminished…
