Pilot killed in Rhode Island plane crash near Connecticut border, officials say

RHODE ISLAND — A single-engine plane crashed at a Rhode Island airport near the Connecticut border Monday, killing the pilot, who was the sole occupant, authorities said.

The Cessna C172 crashed around 12:05 p.m. in a field near the Westerly State Airport, according to the Federal Aviation Administration and Westerly Town Manager Shawn M. Lacey.

The FAA said the pilot was the only person onboard the aircraft. The agency said the National Transportation Safety Board is leading an investigation into the fatal crash…
