The N.C. 50 bridge over Interstate 95 at Exit 79 in Benson shuts down May 28. Workers need 45 days to finish repairs and construct a roundabout near the interchange. The N.C. Department of Transportation disclosed this shutdown as one piece of the bigger I-95 widening plan between Exit 71 and Exit 81.
Motorists can’t cross the interstate using this bridge during repairs. Crews must fix the 24-year-old span. Workers will install new outer rails, widen sidewalks on both sides, and upgrade the concrete surface drivers use.
A roundabout will go in where the northbound ramps meet N.C. 242. Both the fixed bridge and the new roundabout should open by July 12 if the weather cooperates…
