Tallahassee honors Emancipation Day by commemorating African American cemeteries

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — As Tallahassee marks Florida’s Emancipation Day this week, community members and city leaders gathered at newly commemorated African American cemeteries to honor enslaved and formerly enslaved people buried there, many in unmarked graves.

One of those sites is the Houstoun Plantation Cemetery, now located on what is a golf course in Tallahassee. Historians believe the cemetery holds the remains of 80 to 100 enslaved and formerly enslaved people, including children.

Tallahassee Mayor Pro Tem Curtis Richardson said visiting the cemetery was emotional and made him reflect on his own family history…
