Rock the Block has opening night

Friday, May 15, was the first Rock the Block concert of the year, featuring Bent Penny Band Revival, a ’50s-60’s rock band. Taking place on Court House Square, the band played several of their own songs and many more from their childhoods. The lively concert marked the beginning of an exciting lineup of bands expected to play at Rock the Block throughout the summer, as well as the start of many more summer activities.

The Bent Penny Band Revival consists of seven members: Clifford Jones (Lead), Gary Jones (Lead Singer), Matt Warner (Rhythm), Sherry Portwood (Bass), Ritt Warner (Drums), Steve Lyons (Keys), and Jerry Galbrite (Saxophone). Together, the band created a unified sound and an interactive environment for listeners, often offering opportunities for audience members to sing along or help create a beat. While many of the band members might have been born when the genre of music they play emerged, they are still filled with youthful spirit and a love of rock and roll.

Sponsored by the Winchester-Clark Chamber of Commerce and Tourism, the Band found time to return to Winchester after eight years of being away. The band’s bassist, Sherry Portwood, was able to take a moment to explain one of the reasons that they wanted to return, stating, “Most of us are from Richmond, so we know the area. We have just been busy with other events around Kentucky, so it’s nice to be back in Winchester.” Having performed in multiple towns around Winchester, many in the band agreed with Portwood’s sentiment and were excited to be back…
