NEWARK, N.J. (PIX11) — The City of Newark is activating its first Code Red of the year, as the heat index is expected to climb as high as 97 degrees.
Officials warn that extreme heat could lead to heat-related illnesses, heat strokes, and serious medical complications.

The Code Red will be in effect from 9 a.m. on Tuesday until 8 p.m. on Wednesday. Officials also warn that an Air Quality Alert remains in effect across parts of New Jersey due to high levels of ozone.
