‘Some Level of Hope’: New center offers homeless Wilmington residents skills for a fresh start

WILMINGTON, N.C. (WECT) – The Salvation Army of the Cape Fear and Bank of America have partnered to open a new Life Skills Center at the Center of Hope homeless shelter in Wilmington.

The Center of Hope has been open for roughly nine months, offering residents a safe place to stay along with a playground, cafeteria, and common areas. The shelter also features family suites that allow parents and children to remain together during their stay, something many shelters do not offer.

The Life Skills Center was created to give residents the opportunity to build practical skills and work toward long-term independence. Classes are taught by volunteers, including Cape Fear Community College professors and Bank of America employees, and cover topics such as financial literacy, job interview preparation, resume building, and private tutoring for children…
