Beloved Iowa zoo to close after shark bit employee in state’s first ever attack

When you picture the landlocked state of Iowa, it might seem far-fetched that a land of vast cornfields could have recorded a shark attack — yet that’s exactly what happened.

So how did a shark attack occur in Iowa? While the state does have its share of bodies of water, the incident took place at Blue Zoo Des Moines, an interactive aquarium facility located within the Jordan Creek Town Center.

The story grabbed national headlines in 2024 when a Blue Zoo employee was bitten by a shark, which had to be euthanized to free its teeth from the worker’s hand. Now, the West Des Moines facility has confirmed it will be shutting its doors, nearly two years after first opening.
