Charleston Co. School District reports low teacher vacancies ahead of next year

CHARLESTON COUNTY, S.C. (WCSC) — The Charleston County School District is reporting about 70 open classroom positions heading into Memorial Day weekend, compared to around 300 normally at this time of year.

The school board unanimously approved next year’s budget, which includes pay increases for classified and certified staff. The new budget brings the base teacher salary to $67,500 for the new year.

“It’s a lot, I think not just around compensation, but I think the culture in the district, the leadership, where this district is going is playing such a positive role for us not only recruiting but retaining teachers,” Chief Charleston County School District Human Resources Officer Bill Briggman said.
