NOW AND THEN | The Gasparilla Fishery: Echoes of Old Placida

The Gasparilla Fishery was originally a fish house on Gasparilla Island built around 1918.

In 1930, Walter Gault persuaded his father-in-law, Gus Cole (grandfather of Vernon Peeples and Gussie Baker) to help him purchase the business which was then known as the Dixon Brothers Fish Company. He renamed it the Gasparilla Fishery.

The original fish house stood over the water near Cole’s IGA grocery store and the post office he operated on the island…
