Museums to Explore at Beloit College
Opened in 1846, Beloit College is older than the state of Wisconsin. The territory of Wisconsin officially became a state May 29, 1848, two years after Beloit College opened. The campus is beautiful with historic brick structures with stately columns, the picturesque Poetry Garden, 25 larger-than-life modernistic sculptures, the newly built modern LEED-certified science building, and the eye-catching Powerhouse.
Sidewalks weave at interesting angles across the central quad to respect the Indian Mounds, which are 20 conical, linear, and animal effigy mounds built between AD 400 and 1200. These mounds generally served as burial sites and are a source of pride mentioned on every campus tour. Items excavated during mound restoration are in the collection of the on-campus Logan Museum of Anthropology.
Open to the public Tuesdays to Saturdays, Logan Museum is a teaching museum housing approximately 350,000 ethnographic and archeological objects from 129 countries and more than 600 cultural groups. A few hundred of these objects are displayed in The Cube, an awe-inspiring floor-to-ceiling visible storage concept inside the museum.
