Severe thunderstorm sweeps across Staten Island, knocking down trees and cutting power

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — After a sweltering afternoon that pushed temperatures near 90 degrees, heavy rain and thunderstorms swept across Staten Island on Wednesday evening, bringing lightning, gusty winds and torrential downpours to parts of the borough.

The National Weather Service issued a Severe Thunderstorm Warning for Richmond County as the storm moves through the area, warning residents of wind gusts of up to 60 mph and the potential for downed trees and power lines.

Outerbridge delay

The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey has issued an advisory that the Outerbridge Crossing has a delay due to a crash blocking all lanes.

Train disruption

The MTA announced around 7:45 p.m. that trains are not running between Prince’s Bay and New Dorp as workers remove a tree from the tracks near Annadale.

Downed trees

Several incidents involving downed trees have been reported, including a large tree blocking the roadway on Chess Loop in Richmond and another on Giffords Lane in Great Kills. A tree is also being reported as having fallen on an unoccupied car at the intersection of Clove Road and Forest Avenue in West Brighton.

Power outage

Power was restored to over 600 Con Edison customers in Arden Heights just after 8 p.m. While outages continue to be scattered throughout the borough in neighborhoods including Mariners Harbor, Graniteville, West Brighton, Oakwood Heights and New Springville according to the utility’s online outage map…
