Another Round of Showers and Storms Possible Thursday

LUBBOCK, TX (KLBK) – KLBK Chief Meteorologist Jacob Riley has your Wednesday night weather update for May 20, 2026.

Tonight: Mostly cloudy. Stray shower or storm. Low of 54°. Winds: SE 8-12 MPH.Tomorrow: Mostly cloudy. Scattered showers and storms. High of 74°. Winds: SE 10-15 MPH.

TONIGHT:

Clouds will remain around the region tonight, resulting in mostly cloudy to overcast conditions around the region! Winds will be out of the southeast around 8-12 MPH. A few showers will be possible over the lower elevations of the Rolling Plains. Low temperatures will bottom out in the upper 40s to mid 50s by sunrise on Thursday.

THURSDAY:

Warmer temperatures are expected across eastern New Mexico and western Texas on Thursday! Highs will range from the upper 60s to low 80s. A mostly cloudy to overcast sky will remain. Isolated showers (~10% coverage) will be possible through midday. After 4 PM CDT Thursday, showers and storms will become more scattered to widespread around the region! Coverage will increase from west to east. At its peak, coverage will be around 50%! Isolated rainfall amounts over 0.50″ will be possible. Most areas will see between 0.10″-0.25″, with some locations seeing no rain at all. Thankfully, no severe weather is expected! Activity will linger through roughly midnight, as lows settle into the upper 40s to low 60s by sunrise on Friday.

SHORT-TERM FORECAST:

Showers and thunderstorms will remain possible through the short-term forecast period, although coverage will remain isolated to scattered. Some isolated severe storms will be possible Friday and Saturday. Damaging wind gusts and large hail will be possible with the strongest storms. Although tornadoes will not be the primary concern, an isolated one or two will be possible. Locally heavy rainfall will be possible with the strongest storms, and could result in localized areas of flash flooding. High temperatures will peak in the 80s and 90s on Friday, followed by the upper 70s to upper 80s on Saturday. Morning lows will settle into the 50s.

EXTENDED FORECAST:

Our semi-active pattern will remain through the remainder of our extended forecast period! Highs will remain in the 80s with morning lows in the 50s and 60s. Locally heavy rainfall will remain a possibility each day, but widespread heavy rainfall is not likely. A few strong to severe storms can’t be completely ruled out. Winds won’t be too bad around the region, with sustained speeds of 10-20 MPH expected each day.
