Winston-Salem shooting survivor surprises nephew at graduation: ‘Always had a strong bond’

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. (WGHP) — A survivor of a tragic shooting more than a year ago gave his nephew the surprise of a lifetime at his graduation ceremony.

Elrico Torrence Jr. graduated from Forsyth Academy with his peers in the eighth-grade class on Thursday evening. He knew that he would get his diploma when he crossed the stage at Awake Church in Winston-Salem. He did not know his uncle would make his first step back into family events at the ceremony.

Road to Recovery

Brandon Jackson is a survivor of a shooting following a home invasion back in December 2024. Jackson was left paralyzed from the shoulders down after the shooting.

His recovery journey over the past year involved doctor’s visits and therapy. His mother, Eleanor Jackson Green, said obstacles such as transportation costs and company route schedules limit where he can travel. Jackson needs a van that can accommodate his wheelchair.

“Everyone isn’t quite capable of having their own means or being provided their own means or even having the money to … buy their own accessible vans or whatever they need to get out,” Brandon said…
