COLUMBUS, Ga. (WRBL) — The Georgia Department of Transportation (DOT) — West is currently seeking the public’s feedback regarding their proposed Bridge Replacement project that would impact parts of the Chattahoochee Valley.
Georgia DOT officials say the project will replace State Route 520/US 280 over the Chattahoochee River in Muscogee County, Georgia and Russell County, Alabama.
The Georgia DOT — West and Federal Highway Administration alongside the Columbus Consolidated Government (CCG) confirmed that the proposed project will have “no adverse effects” on features, activities or attributes that qualify South Commons for protection under Section 4(f).
Georgia DOT shares why this Bridge Replacement is being proposed. Officials say the bridge:
- Doesn’t meet current design standards
- Is at risk of fracture
- Shows signs of deterioration
Georgia DOT emphasizes that without the completion of this project, the bridge would remain “fracture critical” with cracks, efflorescence, and scour continuing to worsen over time.
Officials remind residents that temporary and sporadic detours of the Chattahoochee Valley will be necessary during project completion. However, all pedestrian access and connection to the Riverwalk will remain open in order to maintain public safety during the construction process…
