Hack at Beacon Mutual exposed sensitive data of 131K Rhode Islanders; lawsuit filed

WARWICK, R.I. (WPRI) — The state’s largest workers’ compensation insurer revealed this week that highly sensitive personal information belonging to more than 131,000 Rhode Islanders was compromised in a ransomware attack earlier this year, prompting a class-action lawsuit.

The Beacon Mutual Insurance Co., which insures most Rhode Island employers for workers’ compensation, began sending letters to customers earlier this week notifying them of the outcome of its internal review of the attack that happened in January.

“Beacon Mutual regrets any inconvenience this matter may cause and appreciates the patience and understanding of our policyholders, agent partners, and other stakeholders,” Beacon Mutual spokesperson Michelle Pelletier said in a statement…
