STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — Following a deadly shooting at the Islamic Center of San Diego, borough officials, interfaith leaders and NYPD members gathered Friday at Borough Hall to condemn the violence and stand in solidarity with Staten Island’s Muslim community.
NYPD Assistant Chief Melissa Eger, the NYPD borough commander, said at the press conference that patrols at houses of worship have been increased and that they are working closely with the faith community to strengthen communication and safety.
“As police officers, we know that public safety is the strongest when communities feel safe, when communities feel supported, and when communities feel connected, like we’re connected here today together. No one should ever, ever fear gathering in prayer or fear practicing their faith,” she said. “The right to worship freely and peacefully is something that we, the NYPD, will always protect.”…
