Beloved Village Diner Cozy Soup ‘n’ Burger Bows Out After Five Decades

Cozy Soup ‘n’ Burger, the family-run Greenwich Village diner known for oversized burgers and thick split-pea soup, is set to close in June after more than five decades on Broadway. Word of the impending shutdown has quickly spread among longtime regulars and late-night loyalists, who say losing Cozy feels a bit like losing part of the block. For now, the team behind the counter is keeping details close, beyond confirming the planned month of closure.

As reported by Crain’s New York Business, owner John Stratidis told the outlet the diner will shutter in June. The May 22, 2026 Crain’s piece is the first local report to publicly document the planned closing and identifies Stratidis as the operator of the decades-old spot.

About the diner

Cozy opened in the early 1970s and carved out its identity with nine-ounce burgers, hefty bowls of split-pea soup and an anything-goes menu that could satisfy just about anyone stumbling in off Broadway. Over the years it became a magnet for NYU students, theater workers and tourists, all sharing counter space and oversized plates. The Infatuation notes the restaurant’s long run and recurring celebrity visits, both of which helped lock in its status as a neighborhood staple.
