FORT BRAGG, N.C. (WNCN) — Tears, salutes and the sound of taps echoed across Fort Bragg Thursday as Gold Star families from across the country gathered to honor fallen Special Operations soldiers ahead of Memorial Day.
The annual remembrance ceremony at the U.S. Army Special Operations Command Memorial Plaza paid tribute to the 1,247 Special Forces soldiers whose names are etched into the memorial wall dating back to 1952.
Army leaders, service members, and grieving families stood together during a wreath-laying ceremony, a moment of silence, a flyover and the haunting sound of bagpipes filling the plaza.
