Ex-amish abuse survivor from PBS documentary shares testimony in Berne

BERNE, Ind. (WANE) – Abuse survivor, former member of the Amish community, and Adams County native, Elizabeth Hilty, joined an area church on Sunday to share her story and bring strength to those who have experienced or are victims of abuse.

Hilty’s story made headlines and gained national acclaim following the release of the PBS documentary, ‘Keep Quiet and Forgive’ from filmmaker Sarah McClure, which follows a woman who confronts her Amish community’s silence around sexual abuse while recovering from her own abuse experience. Through this confrontation, she leads and supports fellow abuse survivors as they navigate trauma, faith, and family ties. Among those survivors featured in the documentary is Elizabeth Hilty herself.

Hilty’s testimony in the documentary brings to light her experience and the hardships she faced after being sexually abused by her husband. She details how the fear, isolation, and grief of her situation and the church’s mistreatment led her to remove herself and her children from the church to heal…
