Soggy start to Memorial Day, but the sun should pop out in New England later

Memorial Day will continue the damp trend across southern New England, with areas of fog, drizzle and leftover showers through the morning.

Expect periods of light rain across the board, and a few brief downpours along the southern New England coast, the Cape and the Islands as a cold front pushes through late morning into early afternoon.

An isolated thunderstorm can’t be ruled out, but widespread storms are not expected.

Rainfall amounts through the day will generally stay under an inch, with many not even seeing half an inch of rain accumulation. If you have travel plans, Monday afternoon will be an easier drive, with the main impacts through the morning including reduced visibility, wet roads and some localized ponding in poor drainage areas.

If you’re heading to parades, cookouts, or traveling keep the rain gear handy early. But conditions improve from west to east through the afternoon, with sunshine beginning to break out by mid to late afternoon. Temperatures respond quickly once the rain moves out, climbing into the upper 60s and low 70s with noticeably more humidity…
