When airline pilot Zach Cromley moved into his Loveland neighborhood a few years back, little did he know his nextdoor neighbor Roger Smith held a special place in aviation history.
“When I met Roger and he started telling me about the gliders, I was very interested because I had never heard about the glider mission before,” Cromley told FOX31.
Smith served in World War II and flew gliders, which were lightweight, motorless aircraft made of materials like plywood and fabric. They were towed by larger aircraft and then released, gliding to the ground and quietly dropping supplies behind enemy lines. They could carry thousands of pounds of military gear, everything from Jeeps to weapons to ammunition…
