South Florida tax preparer sentenced for stealing seniors’ identities

A South Florida tax preparer who stole the identities of more than a dozen people, many of them senior citizens, was sentenced Wednesday to two years in prison.

Ricardo Karns, 38, of Sunrise, ran Karns Taxes & Investments out of a strip mall in Tamarac. Investigators say he used the business as a front, stealing strangers’ personal information to open credit cards and charge more than $160,000 to his own business.

“The unsuspecting victims, whose privacy was completely violated and whose identities were utterly compromised, were left to pick up the pieces when these credit card bills came due,” wrote Chief Assistant Statewide Prosecutor Jonathan Bridges in a court filing…
