Deputies: Suspect rammed car with kids riding while drunk

PORT CHARLOTTE — Deputies arrested a man on Sunday after he allegedly rammed a car with two children in it while driving drunk.

Thomas Denman Colgan, 37, was charged with four counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, as well as one count each of DUI with blood alcohol content over .08%, resisting arrest without violence, DUI with property damage, and leaving the scene of a crash.

Authorities allege Colgan fled the scene after striking the other car and that deputies had to use a Taser to take him into custody.

He was also charged with two counts of child abuse without great bodily harm.

According to his arrest report, deputies with the Charlotte County Sheriff’s Office responded to a call off Olean Boulevard around 8 p.m. Sunday.

They made contact with two adults and two minors at the scene. The adults told deputies that they had been asked to pick up the minors by the minors’ mother; the minors had previously been staying with Colgan and were uncomfortable that he had been drinking earlier in the day.
