Allen County Sheriff’s Department reminds trail users of e-bike safety

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) – On World Bicycle Day, the Allen County Sheriff’s Department is reminding residents of how to safely navigate local trails on wheels.

Officer Aaron Robbins, who also serves as assistant public information officer for the sheriff’s department, is on the department’s bicycle patrol. In the video above, Robbins explains which bikes are allowed on the trails.

“Some of these electric motorcycles and little motorcycles can go upwards of 60-70 miles per hour, and that’s way too fast for our trail system,” Robbins explained, adding e-bikes generally cannot be going faster than 20 mph. Class three e-bikes are not allowed on the trails.

Robbins compared the consequences of unsafely riding an e-bike to those that a speedy driver would face.

“It’s no different than somebody going to buy a sports car,” Robbins said. “We don’t want them driving that at 150 miles an hour on the highway either. So you can get citations, just like speeding tickets or seat belt tickets or things like that. They are citations, class three infractions, that can be issued to you if you are operating one of those vehicles unsafely or inappropriately on the trail system.”…
