Crash leads to OWI, handgun arrest in DeKalb County

DEKALB COUNTY, Ind. (WANE) — A man was arrested after crashing into another car at a stop sign in rural DeKalb County.

At around 7:30 p.m. Thursday night, 30-year-old Austin Brummett was heading west on County Road 40, approaching the State Road 1 intersection. Another driver just ahead of him was stopped at the stop sign, when he collided with the other car from behind.

When officers with the Indiana State Police arrived at the scene, they found that both drivers had sustained minor injuries. ISP officers suspected that Brummett was operating the vehicle while intoxicated. Upon searching his vehicle, they found empty alcohol containers and a handgun.

Brummett was arrested on the charges of:

  • Possession of a firearm by a serious violent felon, a Level 4 Felony
  • Altered gun identification, a Level 5 Felony
  • Unlawful carrying of a handgun with a prior conviction within 15 years, a Level 5 Felony
  • Possession of a firearm by a domestic batterer, a Class A Misdemeanor
  • Operating while intoxicated with endangerment, a Class A Misdemeanor

Brummett was taken from the scene to a hospital and is now residing in the DeKalb County Jail…
