- Jon Rahm proves doubters wrong in Mexico City after being told he ‘forgot how to play’ (themirror.com)
Jon Rahm made a strong statement at LIV Golf Mexico City, securing the title just a week after facing criticism for his performance at The Masters.
On Sunday, Rahm rebounded from a tough showing at Augusta by winning the LIV Golf Mexico City event with an impressive 21-under-par total. He finished six shots ahead of runner-up David Puig, marking Rahm’s second victory of the LIV Golf season and the fourth of his career on the Saudi-backed tour. This win will also boost his position, moving him back into the top 20 of the Official World Golf Ranking.
Rahm earned a $4 million prize for his triumph, but the significance of his comeback goes beyond the paycheck. After a rough start at the Masters, where he posted a first-round 78 and struggled with his approach shots, many questioned his form. The 2023 Masters champion was well off the pace, 11 strokes behind leaders Rory McIlroy and Sam Burns.
Golf Channel analyst Brandel Chamblee was particularly harsh, suggesting that Rahm’s transition to LIV Golf negatively impacted his game. Chamblee noted that Rahm appeared to swing with excessive power on every shot, likening it to a long drive competition, and criticized the quality of competition and course setup in LIV events as factors contributing to Rahm’s struggles.
However, Rahm proved those doubts wrong in Mexico. Playing alongside teammate Tyrrell Hatton in the final group, he shot a stunning 7-under 64 in the last round to secure the title decisively.
In addition to his individual success, Rahm’s team, Legion XIII, dominated the team competition, leading from start to finish and finishing at 45 under par-an emphatic nine-shot victory.
Rahm’s performance in Mexico underscores his resilience and ability to bounce back, reaffirming his status as one of golf’s top competitors despite recent setbacks.
